Owl's Nest Inn At Engadine was built in 1885 by Captain John Hoyt in the mountains just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. The house, originally named Engadine, has been restored and decorated to maintain its Victorian character and charm. Owl's Nest Inn was added to the name in 1995.
The house was built incorporating the most modern technology of its time. Electricity was supplied to the house by a water-powered generator built on the property. Running water was provided to marble top sinks in water closets by a gravity-supplied system. Water was pumped by servants to a storage tank in the attic. From there it was supplied to sinks contained in closets between each of the bedrooms on the second floor. There was also central heat in the house provided by a coal furnace in the basement. Even though electricity is now provided by the local power company, the coal furnace has been replaced with modern gas heat and an air conditioning system has been installed, the water closets are still in use in some of the bedrooms. It is believed that the barn currently stands where Captain Hoyt's locally famous Engadine wine was once made.
The living room is a special place for guests to gather and enjoy each other around the fireplace. An evening reception is always special, whether held in our living room or around our wood-burning fireplace outside on our patio. A piano resides in the dining room for those who would like to entertain the innkeepers. Games, books and a chess set are available on the second level of the inn. Outside there are wraparound porches, a patio, hammock and benches in the meadow for enjoying the breathtaking mountain views. The five guest rooms are spacious, comfortable and have the ambiance of a Victorian home along with modern conveniences such as central air conditioning and ceiling fans. All rooms have sitting areas and private baths. All of the rooms have gas fireplaces and the Engadine Suite has a whirlpool tub for two. We have king, queen or twin beds available.
 We recently added 2 luxury log cabins on top of the same mountain that Mary Hoyt, the daughter of Captain Hoyt, wrote about watching the Vanderbilt home being constructed. The cabins are special, as they are not kits, but designed by one of our guests. They became a reality on August 16, 2003. Mary Hoyt, the daughter of Captain John Hoyt, wrote in her daily journal about being able to view the Vanderbilt home in 1887. She sat and wrote in her journal among the Vineyards of Engadine, and the cabins are situated there today. The cabins have whirlpool baths and wood burning fireplaces to enhance your winter stay. The cabins and inn are only 20 minutes from one of the best known ski resorts in North Carolina, Cataloochee Ski Resort, whitewater rafting, tubing, horse back riding, hot air ballooning and so much more. Most of our guests come to our inn to visit the Biltmore Estate, but leave disappointed because there is so much more to see and do.  Just ask us and we can make your week special here at Engadine.
A full breakfast for our guests in the inn is served at 9:00 a.m. by the fireplace and candlelight in the formal, paneled dining room. You can also enjoy afternoon refreshments, including hot tea, and other goodies. We are sorry, but we do not serve breakfast to our guests in the cabins. Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen and large outdoor grills. We provide your first nights wood and morning coffee. All guests are invited to our evening reception.
